Airbrushing lessons

Using the Airbrush as a Tool

The airbrush is a very versatile tool.   There are many variations for various applications.   I use a Paasche VL-3 for all of my work, and I demonstrate several ways to apply it to your art skills.

How the Airbrush Works

This video demonstrates the basic operation and maintenance of the airbrush.

Spray Painting a Mural

This video demonstrates using the spray gun and the airbrush.  It includes setting up the necesary equipment as well as painting the design from start to finish.

Getting started with the airbrush

Step 1: Dots and lines.

Dots and lines are the basic starting point for using an airbrush.   An easy way to start practicing using an airbrush is take an old t-shirt anjd stretch it over a paiece of cardboard to use as a canvas.

The soft cloth will absorb the paint, making it easieer to concentrate on the spray patterns.

A hard surface will not absorb the paint like the t-shirt will.

Step 2: Rat tails and curvy lines

Learning to use the wrist to create a thick and thin line, and using the elbow to create a smooth curve is an essential movement to master.

Step 3: Using Stencils

Simple stencils cut from cardboard can be used to make effective  graphic elements on shirts and many other products.  Thisnvideo combines the use of stencils with freehand techniques for a simple but nice design.
